Rehabilitative Rhythms – Sarah Thompson

Private Practice Music Therapy

The Rocky Mountain Stroke Center (formerly the Rocky Mountain Stroke Association) has been a supporter of music therapy for a few years now. From the very first time I spoke to one of their support groups, they “got it”. They have always understood that music therapy provides a valuable medium for stroke survivors because it can generate results that other therapies don’t. There is more and more research evidence coming out that describes how musicĀ  encourages neural plasticity and facilitates recovery after a stroke. The music therapy groups at the Rocky Mountain Stroke Center are always full and tons of fun. This is one of my favorite groups to do each week, and we will be adding a second group soon.

When you go into private practice as a music therapist, there is always a decision to be made. Do I serve anybody, or do I focus on a certain niche. My choice, do things I enjoy with a variety of clients while working towards focusing on a niche. In the long run, I feel I can serve my clients and myself better by going into a niche. However, I also think that having experience with a variety of populations serves you better than having only done one thing your entire career.
